Where we are at....
Ok, I can now see the end of my tunnel. I have been swamped with work from a really good customer that I could not let down. Even at the personal expense of letting all of you down. It is never good to string anyone along and I have definitely strung this project along. No doubt losing some folks along the way. For that I am regretful. However I was committed to completing that run of parts for them and would not have had it any other way. That run is now nearing the end. In a few weeks it will be done. At that point I will only have one job in my shop, one focus, one commitment. I will then be completely dedicated to this project. So I thank all of you still here, and to those just coming in, I'm glad you missed the wait!
The TRX-4 is awesome, and has "almost" everything to make it a great scale crawler. Locking front and rear hubs, two speed trans, I really don't like the portal axles from a scale perspective. They do however allow you to not have to worry quite so much about clearance under the pumpkin so I will overlook that one minus point. Now the one thing this truck was missing and was always getting pointed out by my crawling buddy, was the lack of 2wd. He had even bought a spare trans to look at to figure out how to implement some sort of solution. Our first attempts would require moving the rear suspension links in order to fit the various mechanisms to lock unlock the front output shaft. Well at this point I gave up on designing anything more as having to change the chassis was a non starter for me. Well friend never left it alone. He didn't even mind having to change the chassis around. So that being said, he never let it drop and I decided ok Ill make something up and he can have his 2WD. I'll only make one, I don't want to move link position so I'm not having one. Well that's when the current design started. Once the design allowed for a direct swap with no modifications to the factory layout I was hooked. It allowed for the modification to be put in without making any permanent changes to the vehicle. Aside from the machined parts, they are all off the shelf Traxxas parts. This is how a modification should be!
